Robert E. Saute, Obituary

August 1929 - March 2019

Born on August 27, 1929, in West Warwick, Rhode Island to Camile and Lea (Lily) Saute, Bob was a musically-gifted student, and by the time he reached high school, he was playing trombone with dance bands around town. In 1950 he went on to earn a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Science at Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, now the University of Rhode Island. He then transferred to Purdue University in Indiana where he earned both his Master of Science and a Doctorate in Industrial Pharmacy degrees with emphasis on General Engineering, Pharmacology & Toxicology.

Bob later joined the United States Army and served during the Korean conflict in the Laboratory and Pharmacy Divisions of MASH units in both Sapporo and Sendai, Japan until his honorable discharge in 1955.

Back in the United States, Bob embarked on a decorated career in Cosmetic Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals, first in Indiana, then in Pennsylvania, which is where he reconnected with Arda Darnell, a classmate from Purdue. Arda and Bob were married in 1958 and were happily betrothed for 61 years. Bob fathered three sons, Richard (wife Christy), Steven (wife Cindy) and Allen (wife Judy), as well as six grandchildren.

Bob’s career then took him to New Jersey, and later New York, where sons Steven and Allen joined the family, and finally to Boston with the Gillette Company. Bob later moved his family to California in 1971 where, in 1974, he and Arda founded Saute Consulting. With support from his family, “Dr. Bob,” as he was lovingly called, continued to innovate in the field of cosmetic sciences until his retirement in 2010. He made many friends and mentored numerous young scientists and marketers along the way, some of whom carry on his legacy of hard work and innovation today.

Bob Saute was always dedicated to serving his profession and his business community. An active member of both the California Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Science and BIW, he preferred working “behind the scenes” rather than as a visible leader, yet his insights, goals and creative suggestions left an indelible mark on those organizations who benefited from his creativity, integrity and firm sense of values. We will truly miss his warm smile, his simple expression of difficult principles, his sense of excellence and his deep dedication to serving and mentoring others. Rest in Peace, Bob.
